Just back from Antibalas concert @ Crawdaddy. I am disappointed :) far far far far away from the heavens of Tony Allen and Femi Kuti. My expectation was high because I listened to the first few tracks in last Album and liked it a bit and thought the live could be good, but..
To their credit, as individuals, they weren't too bad, what's not working is the group as a whole. It sounded raw and aimless.
Adding insult to injury, one of them was boldly eying girls in the crowd then sang some stupid song about Bush and Cheney and "do you want to have sex with America" ????!
I checked out their website and there was a lot of stuff which, on the surface, looks like a big deal. This is the cheap Myspace culture of today, "cool" website and "cool" friends, a lot of fluff and no substance.
websites don't make great musicians. Great musicians don't need cool websites.
